We’re lucky to call one of the most character-driven ski towns in the world home. Rich in history and stocked full of interesting people, Jackson Hole oozes character. So, Jackson locals take note when we learn about a ski destination that is on-par with our unique experience. Heading down to Ski Portillo and Ski Arpa in Chile during the northern hemisphere’s summer is a prime example of a ski experience that—like Jackson Hole—is one-of-a-kind.
Nestled up in the Andes, above the tiny town of Los Andes and in the shadow of Aconcagua—the largest mountain in the world outside of the Himalaya—Ski Arpa is Chile’s lone cat-skiing operation. Just 80 klicks from the bustling Chilean capital city of Santiago, Ski Arpa boasts an unforgetable summer-time ski adventure for northern hemisphere shredders. To get to Arpa you have to wind up along the washboard dirt road from Los Andes, passing cacti and llamas before reaching the snow line. A tiny cobblestone refuge is the operation’s HQ—serving as warming hut, ticket office, apres hotspot, rental shop, and more. From that staging area, skiers get to access a wealth of Andean back country skiing and riding! There are endless rocks to jump off, chutes to lace through, couloirs to tick off, wide-open bowls to carve, views to soak in, and memories to be made.
The brainchild of a Colorado-based father and son duo, Tony and Anton Sponar, Ski Arpa is a must-hit bucket-list destination for serious skiers. And, Anton—the younger owner of the operation—will be on-site this week to introduce Arpa to Jackson Hole! The award-winning documentary Vaya a la Cumbre will be screened on Thursday night at Spur. Vaya tells Arpa’s story, and recently won The People’s Choice Award at the Coldsmoke Awards. This film is a must-see!
Head over to Spur at the TML on Thursday, January 30th between 4:30–6 PM for an apres beer and an information session about summertime skiing and riding adventures in Chile. Reps from Arpa, Portillo, and more will be on-hand to answer questions and point you in the right direction.
